Dal Verde (After the Green) is the story of Bellosguardo, a small village in southern Italy. Over the past two decades, most of its residents have left in search of better job opportunities.
An elderly man once shared with me a vivid memory from 1943, when he was still a child. From his terrace, he looked eastward through binoculars and saw the American army arriving in the Gulf of Paestum. "I gazed across the vast valley below Bellosguardo," he recalled, "and through the lenses, all I could see was green. After the green, a fleet of ships was docking on the beach."
